Maui, Haleakala – Day 3 Hawaii Cruise

Jessica @ 10K FT Haleakala
Due to the weather situation from what was once Hurricane Felicia, we opted to do the shuttle tour of Mount Haleakala. With the tropical storm hours away, we went up 28 curvy miles to get above 10,000 ft above sea level. It is the fastest ascent from 0 to 10,000 in the world. Our tour guide, Joe’s lived in Hawaii 26 years and is very passionate about the awe of the sunrise over the crater as well as all other aspects of the volcano. The crater is the size of Manhattan Island. Unfortunately for us it was raining and foggy. A group who got up the Volcano an hour earlier actually had pictures of snow. We had a very cold rain! We did not let the weather stop us from trekking by foot to the top to take a few pictures. On the way back down the volcano the clouds opened up and gave us awesome views and one of the most pronounced rainbows that we have seen yet. Due to the rain, we were glad that we were not on the bikes coming down the mountain.
Once we got to the bottom, we were treated to breakfast at a golf course country club restaurant overlooking the 18th hole with the mountains in the background.
We shared the tour with a couple from Vancouver and three ladies from Connecticut. They were all staying at hotels on Maui. They were all very inquisitive about cruise because we were getting experience a variety of Islands and ports. Our favorite part of traveling is the people we get to meet and the Haleakala excursion was no different. We got to share a once in life-time experience with 6 other people an da great tour guide. Not many people venture to the top of the Maui Volcano with an impending Hurricane/tropical storm hours away from the island. We will have some videos and pics of our once in a lifetime experience up as soon as we return home!
