#TwEpic is what happens when you take members from the South Florida Social Media Community and let them run around the brand new Norwegian Epic for a few hours capturing content and getting a first-hand glimpse of makes her so special. To participate, Follow #TwEpic HashTag on January 15, 2011 from 11:30 – 3:00 pm ET.
In July 2010, the brand new Epic sailed into her home port of Miami for the first time. To celebrate the occasion I co-hosted an old-fashioned tweetup in Miami at the Bleu Moon with @24K & @VegasBill. For those not familiar with Twitter, a tweetup is a meetup organized and promoted via Twitter and the attendees tweet during the event (some more than others).
At the Tweetup, @AlexDC brought up the idea of actually having a tweetup on the Epic for the local social media & technology community to attend. Hmmm… A non-passenger Tweetup had never been done before… but sounded like a great idea to me outside of a few possible logistical issues.
#TwEpic becomes Reality
Norwegian Cruise Line has a strong commitment to being engaged online with social media and they loved the idea. So @NCLFreestyle (Norwegian Cruise Line) , @SMCSF (The Social Media Club of South Florida) and @CruiseSource (that’s me) teamed up to plan the first ever Ship Tour and Luncheon Tweetup. So while the innovative, new Epic is docked in Miami getting prepared to sail-away for a week with 4,000 new passengers, the tweetup attendees will be touring the ship, getting served lunch, and tweeting about it to their friends. Due to security reasons, the tweetup is not an open event. Due to high demand for this event, NCL is planning future tweetups aboard the Epic for social media enthusiasts. Follow @NCLFreestyle for details.

The #TwEpic Tweetup is scheduled for this Saturday, January 15th 2011 from 11:30am – 3:00pm ET. Follow the #TwEpic hashtag or our good friend, @ViceQueenMaria on twitter to follow the ship tour live from home. Harvey, a SinglesCruise.com Cruise Director will be writing a review of the event for CruiseSource.us.
Social Media & Cruising Mixed
South Florida has a strong social media & tech community, many of whom have not been on a cruise ship built in the last 5 years. I’m excited that several of them will be able to experience the Epic and share that experience with their online friends. Cruising is the most social form of vacationing making social media and cruising a natural fit.
To me, the Tweetup is at the heart of what makes social media so special. Taking online relationships and solidifying them by meeting face to face. The only negative about the 1st non-passenger tweetup on cruise ship is that I won’t be there. But the great thing about Tweetups is that they allow those of us at home to participate in the event as I will be doing from Charlotte, NC!
