I answered it in 140 characters…
But in reality, it is a question that deserves a lot more than 140 Characters. So @LDJ_Bey, here is the more in-depth answer:
Is October a good month to Cruise?
The Official Hurricane Season runs from June – December. The last 2 weeks of August thru the first week in October is the heart of hurricane season. Personally, I will not go on a land-based vacation to the Caribbean August thru October unless I book it last-minute and there are not any hurricanes or tropical storms in the Caribbean. If you are in St. Thomas and a Hurricane is headed toward the island, you either have to fly home or stick it out through the hurricane. Either way, your vacation is ended prematurely or ruined.
With a cruise vacation, the cruise ship will navigate away from the hurricane. Sometimes the ship will stop at unplanned ports or it will spend a day at sea instead of calling on the planned ports. If there is an active hurricane, the passengers and crew’s safety is the cruise line’s #1 concern.
If you are looking for the best deals, September – November are typically the best times to cruise because the kids are in school [reducing demand] and it is hurricane season. Many travel agents cruise September and October because we like to get take advantage of the deals and we know that it is the safest way to vacation in the Caribbean during those months.
So I recommend October Caribbean and Bahamas cruises for cruisers who:
– Are looking for the absolute best deals
– Are flexible about the ports they are going to
– Are looking to cruise when there are not a lot of kids on the ship
– Understand that the itinerary may change if there is a storm
October is a great month to cruise on the massive new ships, Allure and Oasis of the Seas. These ships are floating destinations, so if you miss a port or two you’ll have plenty to do. Plus the rates will be more affordable for these popular ships.
Bermuda in October
Bermuda rarely takes a direct hit from tropical storms and hurricanes, but the deals to Bermuda in October are awesome. 7 night Cruises departing from New York City in October are currently $479 per person. October is a great time for golf in Bermuda. One important note is that Bermuda will not be as warm as the Caribbean or the Bahamas in October.
Conferences at Sea not Recommended for October
For Large Groups[50+ cabin] or Conferences or Seas, I try to stay away from the Caribbean in late August thru early October due to the work involved in planning these events. There is not as much flexibility when there are events and education planned with conferences at sea, so we like to push the dates out a little to late October – early December.
If the whole reason you are cruising is to go to a specific port and you will consider your vacation ruined if the itinerary gets changed… then cruising in October is not recommended for you.
I recommend buying the Travel Insurance that offers ‘cancels for any reason’ coverage for Caribbean cruises sailing in October and I will tell you why. Typical travel insurance reimburses you if the cruise or your flight is cancelled due to inclement weather. If there is a Hurricane in the Caribbean and your ship leaves as scheduled, then you have to be on it or you lose your money. If your reason for not making it on the ship is fear, then you forfeit the money. But if you have ‘cancel for any reason’ travel insurance, then you can cancel and recover a percentage of your investment back.
As @CruiseDeals Tweeted
In Conclusion, just as the tweet says… October is a great month to cruise if you are looking for awesome deals. It is hurricane season and active storms may impact your cruise itinerary, but this is for your own safety. I recommend buying travel insurance, as I do for ALL cruise vacations![box type=”info”]Want access to real-time cruise advice? Follow @CruiseDeals on Twitter [/box]
The $479 rate on the 7-night Bermuda departing NYC is accurate at the time of publishing of this post. It is for the NCL GEM and Rates will most likely go up as we get closer to the sail date. Any questions please call 800-668-6414 to speak with a cruise consultant.
