It’s time to put 2011 to bed… and toast the coming of 2012. Here are the top cruising stories & posts on CruiseSource for 2011:
#1. Hurricane Irene posts were the most read. CruiseSource has been reporting on hurricanes and their impact to cruise itineraries since 2007. As Hurricane Irene was headed for the Bahamas, Google placed CruiseSource articles ahead of major news sources like CNN, USA Today, etc for many Google searches related to Hurricane Irene and the Bahamas. Google views CruiseSource has a trusted resource for cruising and hurricane information therefor giving us favorable search results. In 2011, Hurricane Irene was one of the biggest stories in the cruise industry due to the number of itineraries impacted by the storm. Thanks to Google, it was the biggest story in 2011 on CruiseSource.
#2. Free Celebrity Alaska Cruise | Grand Prize in the @icedkcups promo. #4 Europe Cruise and Air Package Deals a Necessity. A major story in 2011 for the cruise industry was all the cruise ships in Europe for the summer and no one to cruise on them. Rates for some 7-night summer cruises in Europe got as low as $349 per person. The major issue was airfare from the US was $1299+ per person thanks to high fuel prices and low supply for the additional demand of all the cruisers. The cruise lines and online agencies like CruiseDeals.com had to start getting creative with Cruise and Air Package Deals. Our post reporting the state of Europe cruises was a big winner. #5 River Cruising: 2011 saw explosive growth in the interest of River Cruising. Thanks to this growth, the River Cruising posts written by CruiseSource’s resident River Cruise expert, Colleen Turner came in at #5 on the most read posts.
#6 Alcohol Policies and Packages: We teamed up with CruisewithMike to create the ultimate guide to cruise line’s Alcohol Policies and beverage packages. Each cruise line has slightly different policies about alcohol. There are huge differences in their offerings for drink packages. On Luxury cruise line Regent, all your drinks are included in the price of the cruise and Celebrity offers All-U-Can-Drink packages. Other cruise lines have no options for saving money on adult beverages. These offerings and policies matter to cruisers, making our guide a huge hit!
#7 This Week in Cruise Deals: Martha Lester, CruiseDeals.com chief deal picker, started a weekly post primarily focused on the best upcoming cruise sales. With the never ending barrage of cruise “sales”…No one in the industry is better at deciphering cruise sales and deals than Martha. The NY Times liked her weekly posts so much that they recommend subscribing to CruiseSource for getting the best cruise deals. Now that’s HOT.
