Royal Caribbean and Coca-Cola Introduce Freestyle Machines Onboard
Royal Caribbean International announced they have worked with Coca-Cola to be the first cruise line to deploy a new Freestyle soda machine. The soda machines feature 125 different flavors of Coke products such as Orange Coke or Peach Fanta Zero.
In a blog post, Director of Fleet Beverage Operations, Bob Midyette said that Royal Caribbean worked with Coca-Cola for three years to make modifications to the machines so they would comply with marine environment health codes and interact with special souvenir soda cups that passengers will get when they purchase all-you-can-drink soda packages onboard. The cups contain a Radio Frequency Identification device that will let passengers serve themselves at the machines.
They completed the first installation of Coca-Cola Freestyle on Majesty of the Seas, with several other ships (all U.S. based) scheduled this year.

Paul Gaugin Cruises unveils artist renderings of its new luxury ship, the 90-guest m/v Tere Moana, which launches on December 29, 2012, for its inaugural sailing.
The ship will debut a luxurious new look—chic and stylish with Polynesian touches. To achieve the new design, a multimillion-dollar, multi-faced renovation will take place starting in November, with The Moana receiving new furniture, upholstery, art, lighting, wall coverings, carpeting, ceiling finishes, window treatments, paint schemes, flooring, and floor coverings for staterooms and public spaces.
Eight of The Moana’s 45 staterooms will offer private balconies. All staterooms will feature an ocean view; a queen-size bed, convertible to twin-bed configurations, with fine linens, feather-down duvets, robes, and cotton slippers; a flatscreen TV; a DVD/CD player; an in-stateroom refrigerator replenished daily with soft drinks, beer, and bottled water; and a bathroom with sumptuous bath products.
The Moana will offer two elegant dining venues and will incorporate regionally infused cuisine of destinations visited featuring fresh ingredients from local markets. L’Etoile will showcase an array of tempting specialties, expertly prepared each evening, including culinary creations by Jean-Pierre Vigato, Chef Propriétaire of the two-star Michelin-rated Apicius restaurant in Paris. La Veranda will feature delicious breakfast and lunch dishes with indoor and outdoor dining and will be transformed into a gourmet, reservation-only dining venue nightly.
Large Cruise Ships Permitted to Dock at Sydney Naval Base
According to local reports, Sydney has opened its Garden Island naval base to large cruise ships to accommodate a boom in cruising. Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has said that she will expand the number of promised cruise berths at Sydney’s Garden Island naval base to big cruise ships, thus alleviating cruise congestion in Sydney.
Gillard added that a plan is being prepared to meet the long term needs of the cruise business. For now, the Australian navy will allow three ships this coming season, and another three for 2013/2014. Cunard’s Queen Mary 2, the Celebrity Millennium and Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas have received permission to dock at Garden Island.
