IMPORTANT Update: I’ve been keeping this post regularly updated with cruise impacts from Hurricane Sandy since Thursday 10/25. In that time, this page has been viewed by close to 10,000 concerned cruisers and family of those cruising. I’ve tried my best to respond as quickly as possible to all the questions in the comments. Due to my cruise on the Allure of the Seas departing tomorrow [Sunday], I will no longer be able to keep this page updated.
Please go to your cruise line’s websites for the latest updates on impacted itineraries.
Current Location of Hurricane Sandy as 8 AM ET 10/27 with Projected Path:

If you are departing between Thursday – Saturday, I recommend you be in contact with your travel agent and bookmark this page for updates. You can also follow @CruiseSource on Twitter.
As of now [10AM 10/25], the Port of Nassau is closed due to the track of Hurricane Sandy.

CARNIVAL GLORY – 10/28/12 DEPARTURE HAS BEEN CANCELED
Due to the storm, high winds and tidal flooding are expected in the Norfolk area. The Norfolk cruise terminal is positioned behind a major flood gate in the city which will likely close during the day tomorrow. When this happens, there will be no access to the cruise terminal.
We are sorry to say that we have no alternative but to cancel the 10/28 cruise. Refunds will be processed to the original form of payment within the next 2 weeks.
We know how much our guests were looking forward to this getaway and regret the disappointment this has caused. We look forward to welcoming you on board on another Fun Ship in the near future.
CARNIVAL PRIDE – 10/28/12 DEPARTURE
The current cruise will be returning this evening at 8:00PM and debarking guests this evening. The 10/28 cruise will sail tomorrow as scheduled.
Royal Caribbean Update
As of 10 AM ET on 10/27:
Monarch of the Seas
Due to high winds caused by Hurricane Sandy, Monarch of the Seas’ departure from Port Canaveral, Florida, continues to be delayed. Unfortunately, due to the delayed departure, and the time and speed needed, the ship will be unable to call on Freeport, Bahamas. Also, because of our need to prepare CocoCay, Bahamas, for the weather impact, Monarch of the Seas will not call on CocoCay. Once the ship is able to depart Port Canaveral, it will head out to calm waters.
Enchantment of the Seas
Enchantment of the Seas will be unable to call on Kings Wharf, Bermuda, as originally scheduled. Instead, the ship sailed out to sea in an effort to try to find the calmest seas possible.
Jewel of the Seas
Given Hurricane Sandy’s current location and projected path, it is likely that Jewel of the Seas’ itinerary will be impacted. We will continue to monitor the storm and provide guests sailing on Jewel of the Seas this Sunday, October 28, with additional information on their itinerary once the board the ship tomorrow.
Explorer of the Seas
We encourage guests sailing on Explorer of the Seas on Sunday, October 28, continue to monitor this website for any additional updates.
Princess Update
As of 10/25 at 10 PM ET: According to Princess service agents, the Caribbean Princess departing NYC on 10/27 will no longer go to Bermuda. Which on a 4 day cruise to Bermuda is a pretty big impact. They have not announced the alternate route. Contact your travel agent first thing Friday morning to learn more about the new route and if there happens to be an offer from the cruise line.
Norwegian Cruise Line:
As of 1:45 PM ET:
Based on the current path of the storm, it is possible that Norwegian Gem’s arrival in New York on Monday may be delayed. Embarking guests on Norwegian Gem’s October 29 sailing are asked to check ncl.com for the latest updates and information in the likely event that there are any changes
BTW, I’m departing Sunday from Ft. Lauderdale on the Allure of the Seas. From the projected path, we look fine but I will be watching this one closely.

my parents are on a carnival line in the bahamas..how do I check on them and what should I be doing?
Kelly,
My first recommendation is not to worry. The cruise lines do an excellent job during tropical storms and hurricanes of navigating around the storms.
There is a decent chance that their itinerary will be changed slightly. If they are scheduled to return home on Friday or Saturday, stay tuned here and I will be making updates on if the arrival or departure times on Friday or Saturday will be impacted due to Hurricane Sandy.
The cruise lines #1 concern during tropical weather is passenger safety. Itineraries may get changed and the seas may be a little choppy but they are safe.
Rich
My daughter and son-in-law are on Carnival Fantasy, departed from Charleston, 10/22-10/27. They were supposed to be in the Bahamas yesterday and today. Do you know of any change to their schedule?
I'm not seeing the 10/22 – 10/27 Carnival Fantasy on any changed itinerary lists… but It would not surprise me if their stop in the Bahamas today is altered or shortened.
The cruise lines #1 concern during these situations is passenger and crew safety. So they will keep you daughter and son-in-law out of harms way. Unfortunately, their vacation may be impacted slightly…. but on a cruise the impact is a lot less than if they were doing a resort vaction in the Bahamas…. If they were land-based, they would either have to fly home or stay put as the Hurricane hits the islands.
Thanks.
We are leaving Miami on Monday Nov. 5- to Grand Turk…. How’s the water going to be?
Sandy,
On Monday, November 5th the water in the Caribbean will no longer be impacted by Hurricane Sandy. As longer as there are no new tropical disturbances, you should have clear sailing.
Have a great cruise!
Rich
My sister and I are due to leave on the Carnival Miracle out of NY on Monday 10/29. They are predicting the storm to be right over NY on Monday. Just my luck…
Suzanne,
While your cruise departures looks like it could be impacted, these storms are tough to predict. The models are predicting about a 70% chance of the storm making landfall in the northeast. Fingers crossed that it heads off back to the Atlantic.
This one is a unique hurricane with the possibility of it colliding with two winter storms in the northeast. I recommend following my most trusted weather geek: http://twitter.com/WxBrad or http://facebook.com/bradpanovich
Stay in touch with your travel agent and bookmark this page for cruise updates.
Suzanne, I hope everything goes well & you get to leave on this cruise. I know how much you are looking forward to this cruise.
Me and my 2 friends leaving on this same cruise. Just our luck also !! Keep the faith, storm might head out to sea !1
Suzanne, hope your trip is not affected by the storm. Maybe it will make a turn for the better and the ship will be able to leave on time. Get there early on Monday. Have a great time!!!
10/29/12 DEPARTURE NOW SCHEDULED TO DEPART SUNDAY 10/28/12
The port is expected to be closed on Monday. In an effort to continue with the cruise and keep safely away from the storm, the cruise will now depart on Sunday, October 28. Check-in is scheduled from 2:00PM to 5:00PM, and sailing is set for 6:00 PM from Pier 90.
Is the ship Ecstasy safe and where are they at. We have a number of friends on it and are very concern. They are to port back on Sat. Will they be delayed?
I would appreciate an answer soon if possible. I know you are really busy with all the questions you are getting.
Thanks, Wendy
Hey Wendy,
The Ecstacy is definitely safe. The cruise line will keep passengers and crew out of harms way. Plus the ports on the islands shut down well ahead of the storm for safety reasons.
The cruise lines do not report exact locations of all the ships during the storms… they will let us know if their arrival time back to Port Canaveral will be impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Depending on the path that the storm takes, they may arrive early or late into Port Canaveral. As soon as I know if the Carnival Ecstacy’s arrival time changes I will report it on this page.
While the Carnival Ecstacy’s planned itinerary has most likely been modified, it is for the safety of the passengers and crew. Try not to worry… your friends are ok.
Hope this helps.
Rich
Wendy,
Just Announced: The Carnival Ecstasy will return to Port Canaveral a day late – on Sunday.
Thanks,
Rich
Carnival fantasy leaving this Saturday, looks like its gonna be high seas. Will they still leave port as planned?
As of now, the Carnival Fantasy departure schedule from Charleston has not changed. We will announce it on this page if it does get changed.
How about Carnival Miracle for Monday from NY?
Definitely in wait and see mode for the Carnival Miracle departing out of NY on Monday. The cruise line will see where Hurricane Sandy heads along the project path before making any changes to your itinerary or departure schedule.
Make sure you complete the online FUN PASS. When you do that you can sign up for text message alerts for your cruise.
Carnival fantasy leaving charleston this Saturday. I saw online where they were calling for 30ft waves?! Will we still be able to leave?
Zach, I have not seen the 30 ft wave prediction but the cruise line will not have a cruise depart in unsafe seas…. during a hurricane or tropical storm higher than average seas is expected.
I am leaving on the 28th out of Norfolk on the Carnival Glory…It’s scheduled to be back into port on the 28th but hurricane sandy will be right off of the VA coast…no updates have been posted for Norfolk yet….know anything?
Trish,
Great question. With it being 3 days away and many different routes the hurricane can take between now and then there have not been any changes to your cruise departure time. While hurricane path projection has gotten better over the last few years, the range of the projection are big enough that the cruise lines has to wait and see prior to making changes.
I will report here as soon as there are nay changes to departure schedule. Make sure you have compeleted your online FUN PASS. When filling out the FUN PASS, You can sign up for text messages from Carnival to update you of itinerary changes.
Rich
We are scheduled to fly into Ft.Lauderdale Sat 27th 10:20am, Sail on Ruby, Princess cruises to St. Thomas, St. Maarten on Sunday. Do you think Sat flight will be cancelled, Will ship Sail on Sunday? How will the sea be? Thanks for any info or opinion you can offer. p.s. Trip is planned for our friend's destination wedding.
You will want to monitor your flight schedule closely as there may be delays. I'm also cruising on Sunday out of Ft Lauderdale on the Allure of the Seas — Hurricane Sandy should be well out of our way by Sunday.
I am scheduled to depart on a Princess Cruise to bermuda from 10/27 to 10/31. Has there been any updates if it is cancelled or delayed? How do I find out?
Hurricane Sandy will be far enough south on 10/27 that your departure will not be impacted. If it follows the projected path, your entire cruise should be fine.
How are you getting to the NYC Port?
I was scheduled for this one too; it just cancelled
The cruise has not been canceled but it does appear that Princess has just canceled the stop in Bermuda…. they have not announced what they are replacing Bermuda with.
What are possibilities that you think they would replace Bermuda with? Also, do we get penalized if we want to reschedule the cruise all together?
The 4-day Bermuda cruise on Princess is going to Canadian port(s)
I was booked on that one but switched to the 7 night on RCCL.. so glad I did. Sorry you guys.. looks like Canada. Nice foliage anyway. Make the best of it!
We are scheduled to leave out of Cape Liberty on Sunday (RC Explorer)to Bermuda. I'm following the storm info and RC has our contact info…but how soon do they usually make a decision?
We have a 4+ hour drive to port.
Dawn, all depends on the track the storm takes and how confident the forecasters are on the project path. I would think you would know of impacts to the Explorer of the Seas departure by Mid-day on Saturday.
I know. S. is supposed to go to Boston on Monday and come home Tuesday – at this point, he's planning on eating the price of the tickets. Cost more to change than they cost to buy. I've been thinking of you and hope you get out. We've been on ships during hurricanes – and they do a good job of keeping the ships out of danger.
We are coming from Long Island. So far we are on. Cya at the boat
I'm leaving on carnival ecstasy Saturday but it looks like the weather is bad. How can they put people in danger like that?
I went through a hurricane on a cruise…..fun times!
The storm should be gone by the time the ship leaves late in the afternoon. Enjoy
Stop your complaining….This is a dream come true. You can push Kevin overboard and blame it on the rough seas!
Carnival will not have you depart if it is deemed to be dangerous seas. Depending on the path Hurricane Sandy takes along the project path, it could be pretty far away from Port Canaveral. We will know more tomorrow.
Just announced Carnival Ecstasy will depart on Sunday instead of Saturday.
From Carnival:
unfortunately, this means we will cancel our call in Key West. Check-in for your cruise is now scheduled on Sunday, October 28, 2012 from 11:00AM to 3:00PM, and sailing is set for 4:00PM at Terminal 3. For updates, text CCL3 to CRUISE (278473).
As a result of this change, guests will receive:
• One day pro-rated cruise fare refund
• Refund of government fees and taxes for Key West
• Pre-paid shore excursions purchased for Key West will be automatically refunded
• Gratuities will also be adjusted to reflect the shortened voyage
I have a couple of friends that are on Carnival Fascination last pic I got from them they were in Key West yesterday. Suppose to go to Nassau but with the storm just wondering if they got diverted to go some where else?
Thanks for any info you can give.
My brother in law and his wife are on a cruise that left this past Sunday/Monday and returns this coming Saturday. They don't communicate very well. Is there an easy way to find out which cruise line/ship they might possibly be on?
If you do not know which cruise line or ship they are on, I'm not sure if it is possible to find out. If you call the cruise lines, there is a good chance they will not tell.
What port did they cruise out of?
That's what we figured… Pretty sure they left out of Florida. My guess is they are either on a Carnival ship or Royal Caribbean. I'm sure they are fine but have learned to be sure to get their travel plans ahead of time and not assume they've kept someone in the loop. Thanks.
You're welcome… and I agree that their original itinerary may have been modified, but they are safe.
This is why you should always buy insurance. Don’t leave home without it! Hope you all never get to use it, but you just never know.
The last report was that the storm will impact NYC and Long Island Monday and Tuesday. Hope Suzanne and I get to sail away on Monday.
I hope so too!
Carnival Miracle: 10/29/12 DEPARTURE NOW SCHEDULED TO DEPART SUNDAY 10/28/12
The port is expected to be closed on Monday. In an effort to continue with the cruise and keep safely away from the storm, the cruise will now depart on Sunday, October 28. Check-in is scheduled from 2:00PM to 5:00PM, and sailing is set for 6:00 PM from Pier 90.
Call 800 Carnival if you are not able to sail tomorrow.
Princess just cancelled our Cruise from New York to Bermuda that was scheduled to leave Saturday.
Did know you were going? With whom?
Drat!
Boohoo!! Hey how's La La? Is she on FB? Tell her I said high.
Hi Anthony Schiavo La's good; she's anti-facebook. I'll tell her hi for you!
Liz Czibur-Riggen My boyfriend… who do you think LMAO!
hope he is a cutie!
Adele, according to my sources the cruise is not cancelled but the stop in Bermuda has been cancelled.
Be sure to check that email. The cruise is not cancelled, so far only the Bermuda stop
Correct, the Caribbean Princess departing 10/27 has NOT been cancelled.
Rich Tucker, you are awesome…Thanks for all the checking and confirming. I was on edge all day, just watching weather chnl. going into a funk. Your posts eased my mind. Ole Ole Ole Ole, feeln’ hot hot hot…
You’re most welcome! I’m glad you found my updates to be useful.
I promise I did not pay Susan to make this comment!
I have friends on Celebrity Summit, just hoping they are safe. They are headed to Puerto Rico. Any word?? Thanks
The Celebrity Summit is safe. Hurricane Sandy is north of Puerto Rico – and Puerto Rico did not get impacted by the storm.
Do you know if Carnival Miracle to Puerto Rico/St. Thomas from NY on Monday will still be leaving?
Linda Barbieri Zisa No changes as of yet to Carnival Miracle departure schedule…. there is a wide range where the storm may be on Monday. We will update the page as there are announcements.
Thank you !
Thank you!!!! Glad to hear it.
Carnival Ecstasy is “at sea” today and suppose to dock at Port Canaveral This Sat at 7:00. Are they still on schedule? And will “at sea” today mean they are staying on the west side of Florida until they need to sail to port Canaveral?
Thanks, Sue Ann
Sue Ann,
Seem like they are predicting slightly worse weather on Friday than on Saturday in Port Canaveral. The Cruise Lines will be making updates very soon on these itineraries…. updates will either confirm no impacts to arrivals and departures from Port Canaveral or a change of schedule. I’ll report here as soon as they are out.
I’m not sure the exact locations today of each cruise ship, but I’m sure that they are keeping them out of harms way and trying to find locations with less rain and wind as to make the day at sea more enjoyable.
My niece is on a Royal Caribbean Cruise to Bermuda. I am not sure what the name of the ship is. They are due to return to New Jersey on Sunday. Do you think they will have any problems?
Barbara,
The good news for the RCL cruise returning to Bayonne on Sunday is it looks like the storms progression north has been slower than originally predicted, so now predictions have a Monday – Tuesday Landfall. They may have arrive a little early into port, but will be fine. OF course, there is a big range as to where Sandy may be on Sunday, so we will have to wait and see.
Thank you! This is very helpful information.
Thank you Rich!
I am scheduled on the Glory leaving Norfolk on Sunday. It doesn’t look very promising for good weather on Sunday or Monday. Do you think Carnival might delay the cruise. I know the Glory is supposed to be in drydock from the 2nd until the 15th for improvments on some of the restaurants and lounges.
John,
It all depends on the path the Hurricane Sandy takes within the projected path. With landfall in the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast predicted for Monday or Tuesday, I think there may be good chance that you will get out of Norfolk on Sunday without delay.
Hopefully for your cruise she goes along the eastern most line of the project path… if she does that you’ll be fine.
I will report back here if there are any updates for the Carnival Glory… make sure you complete your FUN PASS and be in contact with your travel professional.
Cruising at the end of November in Western Caribbean. Are tropical storms common at that time of the year?
Denise,
While late November is still considered hurricane season…. hurricanes that late are rare due to conditions not being favorable for them.
Our friends and their family are cruising the Caribbean on Allure of the Seas (left last Sunday). Is the storm hindering their arrival time come this Sunday? Where are they now? We’re so concerned. Thanks.
Hey Dawn,
I’m cruising on the Allure of the Seas on Sunday. This current cruise that your friends is on is a western Caribbean itinerary. So today they were in Cozumel, MX. And tomorrow is a Sea Day where they go from Cozumel to Ft Lauderdale. By the time the Allure is supposed to arrive in Ft Lauderdale, Hurricane Sandy will be far enough north that they will be fine.
No need to worry. Cozumel is well west of the storm and the Allure of the Seas is the largest ship at sea.
Hope this helps,
Rich
Thank you so much Rich! We’re feeling a whole lot better — thanks to you! It’ll sure be good to hear what they’ll have experienced – if anything at all!
So kind of you to take the time to write!!
Thanks again!
Dawn
Dawn,
You’re welcome! I’d love to hear a recap of their experience for future storms….
If you have a moment when they return to let me how it was at for them, I’d really appreciate it.
Thanks!
Rich
My sister is on the Coral Princess that left on Tues. Oct. 23rd going to the Panama Canal. Any updates on that ship?
oh no….if there is something they will not sail into the storm. Not sure where they would go instead, but they would steer clear of it. Have you gotten on their website and inquired directly?
Diana Leneker no, as I am not sure of her itinierary. I just know she left on tuesday and she called my other sister and said they would be taking a different path because of the storm but havent heard anything since then.
They are fine. The great thing about cruising vs. landbased vacations this time of year is that cruises can navigate away from the storm… if they were in Jamaica or bahamas at a resort they would have flown home early or go right through the storm. The Coral Princess should be in the western Caribbean and not very impacted by this storm.
I was wrong about the ship, they are on the Island Princess which I heard was fine.
Please send us an update on the status of Carnival Sensation which has been scheduled to depart Port Canaveral on 27 Oct to the Bahamas. As you know Hurricane Sandy is hitting the Bahamas as we speak Thank you.
The Carnival Sensation is scheduled to depart Port Canaveral on Sunday Oct 28th.
Hurricane Sandy should be far enough north by the end that there will not be any issues for the Sensation. People can book the Carnival Sensation depating October 28th right now for $219 + tax per person:

My daughter and son in law are on their honeymoon on Carnival Dream. just got word they will be back to cape canavral one day late on Snday. she repeats what you have said that the number one goal of crew is to keep crew and passengers safe. from one who has never been on a cruise, just wanted to hear from an expert if it is a scary experience? she says they are not scared but will jus enjoy the extra day on the ship. is she just tryiing to make me not worry? or should i worry?
Beth,
The Carnival Dream will stay out of harms way. Coming in a day late shows Carnival’s commitment to keep the passengers and crew safe.
I’ve cruised during active storms, and it will get a little rockier than normal but my guess is that everyone on board is having fun and will enjoy their extra day of vacation.
One of our CruiseDeals.com cruise consultants, Gary is on board the Carnival Dream right now too. We have not heard from him, but we will get to hear about the experience when he returns to work next week.
Hope this helps,
Rich
Hi we add on the ruby princess out if fry lUderxale on Sunday. Any updates?
I'm cruising out of Ft Lauderdale on Sunday on the Allure of the Seas. The Storm will be up by the Carolinas at that time. Both cruises will leave out on time.
I plan on monitoring my flight to FLL pretty closely… but we should be fine.
Hi Rich: We are booked for Queen Mary out of Brooklyn NY to Southhampton UK leaving tomorrow at 5pm. I am astonished there is no updates from Cunard anywhere. I knew I was taking a chance with rough waters this time of year but come on! Very afraid of seasickness on this trip.
Judy,
I recommend getting some Bonine for the motion sickness concerns.
There are other cruises departing tomorrow out of NYC and Bayonne, NJ and to this point none of them have altered their departure schedule. As of now…it appears, tomorrow Sandy will be far enough south for you to get out safely.
You may initially hit higher seas than normal, but I'm guessing they will navigate the ship further north to get to calmer seas.
hopefully, the motion does not impact your enjoyment of the Queen Mary.
Rich Tucker.
The princess bermuda cruise is still on – any news where up north we will be docking on Monday?
thanks you helped a lot!
Hello, my parents are scheduled to return to Bayonne NJ tomorrow morning, 10/28 on Royal Caribean after being in Bermuda. Is this ship still planned to arrive as scheduled?
Yes, As of 8:30 PM ET 10/27 the Explorer of the Seas is still scheduled to come in the morning and sail out tomorrow as scheduled.
How is Carnival Explorer of the Sea making it’s way to New York
Hey Rich ,
What about the Carnival Pride for 10/28/12 out of Baltimore. Do you think it will still leave port.
CARNIVAL PRIDE – 10/28/12 DEPARTURE
The current cruise will be returning this evening at 8:00PM and debarking guests this evening. The 10/28 cruise will sail tomorrow as scheduled.
Monitor Carnival’s page for updates: http://www.carnival.com/core/faq.aspx#q-1235022
Just wondering if there is any news about Explorer of the Sea that is to leave later this afternoon. My parents flight leaves at ten from Pittsburgh and I am trying to make sure for them.
As of now, no change. Monitor this page from RCL for updates: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/contentPage.do?pagename=important_updates
About the Gem from Ncl, sailing 10/29 from NYC was cancelled and I would like to know what woud happen
