This Week’s Handpicked Deals
Family Drive and Cruise Vacations
We know that family travel can get very expensive, especially when it comes to airfare. Once your family has expanded, suddenly flights aren’t just twice the price but three, four or even more times more expensive. That’s what makes cruising such a great value, especially for families. There are so many ports that are within driving distance for many, airfare can be taken out of the equation and a vacation becomes much more affordable. What you save from airfare can be better spent on shore excursions, treating yourself to an upgraded cabin or putting it away for the next vacation!
So which cruise line and which port is best for your next family cruise? There are lots of different options, but we’ve picked out our top family cruises departing from what we call “home ports”. All these get high marks for their kids programs and activities as well as comfortable family accommodations (you can shake that “packed like sardines” vision out of your head)!

Disney Cruises, the Ultimate in Family Vacations
Disney is an obvious choice for families. Onboard a Disney cruise, you get the ultimate Disney experience but with no lines for rides or food, no waiting for buses, no making multiple stops going to/from the parks, no tired kids or exhausted adults. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast, play in the kids’ venues, ride the AquaDuck® waterslide, sun by the pool, or relax on Castaway Cay. Plus, there are plenty of opportunities to meet and mingle with Mickey and the gang with very short to virtually non-existent lines in air-conditioned comfort.
You can tell Disney’ cabins have been designed with a family in mind, all staterooms with the exception of standard insides (categories 11A, 11B, and 11C) feature a split bathroom design with separate sinks allow several people to wash up at the same time. They also offer spacious ocean view and balcony staterooms on all of their ships that accommodate 5 passengers comfortably thanks to great berth arrangements and generous space.
Disney’s fleet has grown in the past couple of years, providing opportunities to take a Disney cruise out of several different ports including: Port Canaveral, Miami, Galveston and Vancouver. In May, 2014, Disney will offer a few short cruises out of San Diego which will be a great opportunity to get a taste of the Disney Cruise experience.

There are just two ships that sail roundtrip from Baltimore and the revitalized Grandeur definitely takes first place in our eyes.

Royal Caribbean Oasis & Allure: Fort Lauderdale
The Allure and Oasis of the Seas are truly destinations in themselves and totally worth a long drive. Both of these huge ships offer endless amounts of activities for the whole family, including “the DreamWorks Experience”. You will create unforgettable moments with your favorite characters from Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon. Guests can pose for pictures with characters, interact with them during meals, laugh at their antics during parades and watch their movies in our new 3D theaters.
These two ships are known for their huge variety of stateroom types. Their innovative cabin types include the Boardwalk and Central Park View Balcony and outside staterooms. There are also selections of dedicated family accommodations, some even can sleep up to 6 passengers- and we aren’t talking about top tier suites!
Some Royal Caribbean ships, including the Oasis, Allure and Freedom, offer special family inside, ocean view and balcony staterooms that offer extra space for families of 4 to 6 passengers. These staterooms offer great space and typically end up making more sense cost wise than getting multiple cabins. However, these cabins are very limited so you really need to plan ahead to take advantage of them. Check out our favorite deal:
