I recently asked some Cruise Holidays travel experts about trends they’re currently seeing, and of all the topics that simmered to the top, I found this to be the most interesting:
An extremely high consumer interest in the new Viking Ocean Cruises — this is Viking River Cruises’ new small ship ocean cruise line, which will be setting sail in 2015.
Viking Ocean Cruises’ first vessel, Viking Star, will hold 928 passengers. Its early voyages will include Scandinavia and the Baltic, and the Western and Eastern Mediterranean.
Additional highlights include:
- All veranda staterooms
- Two pool choices – one with a retractable dome for all-season swimming, and the other being an infinity pool – glass-backed, cantilevered off the stern
- Like many river cruise ships, Viking Ocean Cruises also includes beer and wine with lunch and dinner service
Itineraries focus on destinations, often with late evenings or overnights, so guests can enjoy local nightlife or evening performances.
What the experts are saying:
Anita Lynch, a Cruise Holidays franchise owner in Durham, North Carolina, said when she was checking on availability for some clients, Viking Star was just about sold out for 2015 on sailings they announced no more than a month or so ago. “I won’t try to guess if this portends anything – a move to smaller ships, loyalty to a brand, whatever—but it was startling to me to see such sales activity for sailings two years out,” said Lynch.
“The Viking Star has been a hit; clients like the fact that this is an ocean cruise, but excursions are included in addition to the wine with dinner. Also appealing is that it is an all-balcony ship with only 930 passengers. We are booking these for 2015 with no problem.” ~ Theresa Reinagel, Cruise Holidays of Williamsburg.
“People like the included excursions, the smaller scale, all balcony, etc. and it provides great value compared to balcony cabins for some of the other mid-sized upper premium ships. It also helps that Viking has a fantastic air promotion to Europe included with some of these sailings. ~ Rob Clabbers, Cruise Holidays of Chicago on Magnificent Mile
If Viking Ocean Cruises truly capitalizes on the current popularity of river cruising, and successfully translates this into bookings on Viking Star, this means one thing for consumers – you really are going to want to book early.
