10 Things you MUST do while on the Norwegian Breakaway

I was on the Norwegian Breakaway for half of a 7-nt Bahamas Cruise last week.

From guest interviews and my own personal experience, I’ve put together this list 10 things you MUST do on board the Norwegian Breakaway.

Top 10 on Norwegian Breakaway:

#1.  Take a plunge on the Free Fall Water slide.   The water slides are not just for kids.  At one point when it had gotten too chilly for mom’s to let the kids go down slides, I look up and see only adult men waiting at the top to go down.  The slides are serious fun for all ages!

#2 Martini at Sunset at Shakers Waterfront.  On Friday or Saturday when sailing back toward NYC, the sun sets on side of the ship with Shakers.   I recommend spending Friday night there before you get too far north so it isn’t too chilly.

#3 Dinner at Moderno Churrascaria, Brazilian-style steakhouse.  Several guests I spoke to put this on the top of their favorite dining options on the Norwegian Breakaway. I even had one very experienced cruiser tell me that it was one of the best specialty restaurants on any ship on any cruise line.   Not only did everyone rave about the meat at Modorno, they also raved about the freshness and huge selection on the salad bar.

#4 Lunch at Uptown – Meatball Sub.  I ate lunch at Uptown Restaurant on Saturday [the last full day of the cruise] and I was one of handful of people up there.  It’s tough to choose which is better… the view or the delicious meatball sandwich.  I took a photo of both:

You can see the view is awesome and I had it pretty much to myself!

#5 Ice Bar – $20 includes two drinks. It is an experience – you have to do it just to say you did it.

#6 Walk the Plank – It is a thrill, I spoke to several adult cruisers who chickened out as they got started on the ropes course.  When else can you go stand 17 floors above the ocean

#7 Eat at the Shangai.  A la Carte noodle bar in the casino area.  $5.99 gets you a LARGE bowl of tasty Asian noodles with seafood or meat.  The Shrimp Dumpling appetizer is fantastic as well.  Of course, complimented well by a nice Japanese Beer.

#8 Rock of Ages Show – Great reviews from the guests I spoke to about the show. I did hear some parents surprised by the adult content of the show. So parents may want to reconsider taking younger kids.

#9 Pizza at La Cucina – If you go to the Italian Specialty restaurant, it is a must that you get a pizza for the table to share.  The Bolognese pizza was very good.  I also really enjoyed the steak at La Cucina.  Yes, a couple pizza slices and steak is a lot of calories… I know :)

#10 20.20.20 special at Madera Spa – According to the assistant spa manager, on the LAST day of most of the 7-nt. Bahamas cruises on the Norwegian Breakaway cruise the Spa has its best sale.  You can get 20 minutes on your choice of several services including back massage, hot stone massage, foot massage etc.  For 1 service it costs $39, for 2 services $59, and for 3 services $99.   So I choose 2 services [40 total minutes] for $59 which was half off the regular prices.

Boom, I just saved you spa lovers $59 the next time you are on the Norwegian Breakaway.

I did not add it to the 10 MUST dos… but for me hitting the gym is a must.  After eating all the food mentioned above, I have to burn off some calories.  The Norwegian Breakaway is one of only a 4 cruise ships to offer FLY WHEEL.  And when docked in Nassau, you can’t beat the view from the treadmills.

  1. Rich…great article, great list. I would add to it one more must do for guests of all ages. We did it on the second night of the cruise so you missed the experience with us- Cirque Dreams & Dinner Jungle Fantasy. This is a Cirque de Soleil dinner show and the costumes and acrobatics were amazing. This type of show sells for at least $100 per ticket in NYC or Philly and includes a 5 course dinner during the show on the Breakaway for $39 per person. It was an awesome “must do” and I am bringing my family to check it out when I sail again on the Breakaway next week! Great seeing you onboard!!

  2. Hey Rich,

Some great suggestions..but my favorite entertainment venue was .Howl At the Moon and what about those dancers from “Burn the Floor!” Wowza! Truly a great ship with amazing venues!

    • Sheri,

Thanks for adding your suggestions! With the Breakaway, it was tough only picking 10… the show we got from the “Burn the Floor” dancers in the Manhattan room was definitely one of the coolest things I’ve experienced on any cruise!
