In 2008, when we cruised Hawaii on the Pride of America, Hurricane Felicia was heading straight for us while we were in Maui. Luckily for us, the storm weakened and changed direction only causing light rainfall. Something about disturbance actually made it snow while we were at the top of Mt Haleakala on Maui..
Direct hits from Hurricanes is pretty rare for Hawaii and legend has it that the big Island has never taken a direct hit.
This week we have an even more rare event occurring, there are two storms heading toward the islands. The first is Category 4 Hurricane Iselle expected to make landfall on Friday and the second is Tropical Storm Julio, 2 – 3 days behind Iselle.
Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America, is the only ship that offers 7-night Hawaiian Cruises. The Pride of America sails roundtrip Honolulu, and is scheduled to be in Kauai on Thursday and Friday of this week. On Saturday, the Pride of America is scheduled to be in Honolulu to start next week’s 7-day cruise.
Pride of America Impacts from Hurricane Iselle
As of 8/6/14, 1 PM EST Norwegian Cruise Line has not announced itinerary changes for the Pride of America that would impact the the Saturday 8/9 departure from Honolulu. I will add updates to this blog post as they are announced [bookmark this page][box] UPDATE: As of 10 AM EST on 8/8 NCL Says:
At Norwegian Cruise Line, the safety and security of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance. Therefore, the company is closely monitoring the paths of Tropical Storm Iselle and Hurricane Julio in the Pacific.

I know everyone who is booked for next week’s cruise will be watching Hurricane Iselle and their airline’s website closely. With a Saturday departure many of them have Thursday or Friday flights to Hawaii that may be impacted by the storms. Hopefully, these storms will do like Hurricane Felicia did for us in 2008.
For those who are booked on this upcoming Pride of America cruise it would be too late now to buy Travel Insurance [hopefully, you already have it]. But for those who are cruising 8/15 and later should read my explanation on Why Travel Insurance is Important during Hurricane Season.
