We just returned from the Quantum of the Seas Royal Family Inaugural Cruise which was the first sailing from the US that allowed kids.
We brought our 7 year old daughter along with us to get the first hand family experience.
Here are some tips and tricks we learned on board to help you get the most out of your Quantum of the Seas Cruise Vacation:
11 Tips for Quantum of the Seas:
These are tips for the Quantum of the Seas and can be applied to her sister ship the Anthem of the Seas since the Anthem will launch in 5 months and the Quantum will head to China in May 2015.
#1. Pre-Book Restaurants and Shows as early as possible. The Quantum of the Cruise Planner makes it easy to pre-plan all your daily activities including restaurants and shows.
I recommend booking your Quantum & Anthem of the Seas Cruise in months in advance so you can get into the pre-cruise planner and register for lunch, dinner, and shows. We enjoyed the dynamic dining, but there were a couple of restaurants that we would have liked to have eaten at. Wonderland looked awesome…but they said it sold out 4 months in advance. Jamie’s Italian restaurant is another specialty dining restaurant that is very popular and needs to be booked in advance.
#2. If you have kids, do the DreamWorks Character breakfast. Heck, there were even several couples at the breakfast who did not have kids. While you are there, make sure to order the Chocolate Milkshakes!
Yes, my wife and I saw chocolate milkshakes on the menu, and we both said “chocolate milkshakes for breakfast??” then quickly decided why not and ordered them. Our daughter loved the milkshakes, food and of course the Shrek Characters.
#3. Pre-Register for Starwater. SHOW UP EARLY. Quantum of the Seas StarWater is an amazing show, and if you show up early you can get the front center seats like we had. We were actually 1 row up in the center and the seats were perfect. You are right in the middle of the action.
Show up to Mama Mia Early too. We arrived 15 minutes prior to the start of the show and had to sit behind a pole. So, I invested 2 hours of my cruise time having to dodge a pole to view the show. It was still worth it, but I would have rather shown up early.
#4. Solarium in the morning is so relaxing. I got to the aft pools in Solarium at 8 AM and there no one else there. The pools and view are so relaxing.
#5. Make sure you do your online check-in. For many cruises I forget to do my online checkin and it does not cost us too much time to board. But with the Quantum of the Seas, if you do your online registration and print your set sail pass, you can get on board the ship in minutes! Out of any ship I’ve been on the time difference in board the ship was dramatically different for those who had their set sail pass in hand.
#6. Silk is all about the Apps! Order one of each… no seriously, the apps are delicious! And they are meant to be shared with the table, so you can order one of each and let everyone try them all. The Hibachi Steak entree was good too.. but the appetizers shined!

NOTE: The Crab Cake appetizer at Chic is another must-order item on board the Quantum of the Seas.
#7. Not all bars serve all types of drinks…. I personally liked the fact that each bar had their specialities… but I know some people did not like the fact that they were not able to order slushy drinks like Pina Colada in every bar. Some bars did not have blenders. With that said, there is a bar on board the Quantum of the Seas for everyone. They have a Michael’s Pub with it’s own craft beer and Brooklyn Lager on Tap, a Wine Bar, the Bionic Bar [get served by robots] and pool bars serving your typical cruise drinks.
#8. For lunch, go to Cafe Two70. Order the Roast Beef Sandwich [the same popular sandwich at central park on Allure and Oasis] – then eat lunch in Two70 and enjoy the best view on the ship.
#9. Dinners took less than 1.5 hours at the main dynamic dining restaurants. When I tried to preschedule dinner and shows online it tried to force me to have 2.5 hours between start of dinner and the show. We were able to eat at Grande, Chic, and Silk in less than 1.5 hours and if we were in a bigger hurry we could have skipped desert.
If you are were unable to make reservations online ahead of time for Grande, Silk or Chic, go speak with maitre de at 5:30 PM. They were able to squeeze us in to Grande with plenty of time to spare for our StarWater reservations
#10 Grande Requires a Jacket. The food and service at Grande were wonderful. Lobster Bisque, Lobster Tails, and Chocolate Lava Cake all recommended!
We were not able to register online for Grande, but my 7-year old daughter loves to go to formal dinners. They were able to fit us in, because a few people were denied getting into the restaurant due to the men not having a jacket. The dress code is very relaxed at Chic and Silk, but for Grande men will need to wear a sports coat or suit jacket.
#11 Internet Speed Lived up to the Hype. I’m a power internet user… and I can say that the speed of the internet is similar to what I see at home. So, if you need to remain connected and be able actually get work done while on your cruise, the Quantum of the Seas supposedly has the same amount of bandwidth as ALL OTHER cruise ships combined. I can honestly say, I was never frustrated by internet speeds while on board the Quantum.
After experiencing the Quantum of the Seas for only 3 days, I am upset that she is moving to China after only 18 sailings. But, the good news is that her sister ship the Anthem of the Seas arrives in Bayonne in November 2015.
