Hurricane Earl has caused several ships to change itineraries in order to avoid the storm. Some of the most popular Islands in the Caribbean like St. Maarten and St. Thomas are too close to the projected path of Hurricane Earl. So in the interest of safety and not ruining vacations the cruiselines have altered some itineraries of ships currently cruising the Caribbean.

Carnival Victory, Carnival Pride, Carnival Dream, Norwegian Epic, Enchantment of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, and possibly the Norwegian Dawn will have their itineraries modified due to the storm. You can see all the details on these changes on the CruiseSource.us Hurricane Cruise Tracker page.

Tropical Storm Bonnie is causing some minor impacts to cruise itineraries. TS Bonnie referred to as “Rain with a Name” by @wxBrad , has forced the Carnival Pride, Carnival Destiny, and Grandeur of the Seas to make minor itinerary changes in order to avoid the storm. The Carnival Destiny is swapping ports, while the Grandeur of the Seas and Carnival Pride are skipping a port. Currently, Norwegian Cruise Line is reporting that they have not modified any itineraries due to the storm. These minor changes in itinerary only proves why cruising is a better option than land-based vacations during hurricane season. If you are on a ship, they will sail around the storm. If you’re at a resort on an island, you are either stuck or have to go home early when a storm is approaching.

CruiseSource.us has been reporting on storm impacts to cruises for years. If you’re cruising between August and October make sure to subscribe to the blog or Follow @CruiseSource on Twitter to stay up to date on all Cruise line impacts from Hurricanes and Tropical Storms.

Current updates from the Cruise lines in regards to the 8.8 magnitude Earthquake in Chile and the Tsunami warnings that followed. The best news is that the Hawaiian Islands and the NCL Pride of America which was due to be in Honolulu yesterday were not damaged. The Pride of America and Naval Vessels stayed at sea because in the case of an approaching Tsunami, ships are safer out at sea. If you are scheduled to sail on the Star Princess departing out of Valparaiso you’ll want to read below and stay in contact with your Travel Agent in case Princess has to change plans. I will update the CruiseSource.us when I become aware of changes, so you can subscribe in the top right hand corner of the page.

From NCL.com:

Info for Norwegian Sun & Pride of America Guests (updated)

Pride of America Guests
Pride of America will dock in Honolulu at approximately 3 pm HST. Guests embarking on today’s cruise should arrive at the pier between 7 and 9 pm HST. The ship will depart later this evening for its seven-day inter-island cruise. We appreciate our guests’ cooperation.

Norwegian Sun Guests
Norwegian Sun is in Montevideo, Uruguay today as scheduled. The ship will arrive in Buenos Aires, Argentina tomorrow as scheduled and embark guests on the February 28, 2010 cruise. We are closely monitoring the situation in Chile and will keep guests updated as to any changes to the current scheduled itinerary.

From Princess.com:

Star Princess Sailings in South America

Star Princess is currently sailing in South America and is en route to Valparaiso, Chile, where the cruise is scheduled to conclude on Tuesday, March 2.

Voyage 9005: Arriving Valparaiso Tuesday, March 2

We have been in close communication with management onboard Star Princess and, where possible, our contacts in Chile. Based on the information we currently have obtained, we do not anticipate any changes to our arrival in Valparaiso on March 2. The ship’s call to Puerto Montt tomorrow is scheduled to proceed as planned. The authorities in Puerto Montt have confirmed that the port is open and fully operational. Officials have also advised that the city and surrounding area has suffered minimal damage and virtually all tours will operate as planned.

We are aware that the airport in Santiago is currently closed and appears to be closed through Monday, March 1. We are reviewing the impact of that closure and will provide updates as they become available.

Voyage 9006: Departing Valparaiso Tuesday, March 2

Star Princess is still scheduled to arrive on Tuesday in Valparaiso, Chile on Tuesday, March 2. Based on information that the Santiago airport will be closed for the next 72 hours, at this time we expect embarkation to commence as planned.

However, this is a very fluid situation and could change at any time. We encourage passengers to make any necessary adjustments to plan their flight to arrive in Valparaiso on Tuesday, March 2.

Pacific Tsunami Warnings

The Princess ships cruising in areas of the Pacific Ocean rim that have received tsunami warnings, are not adversely affected. As necessary we are making itinerary adjustments to ensure the safety of our passengers and crew. The location of our ships and their status is as follows:

Coral Princess is at sea, en route to Costa Rica and is unaffected.

Dawn Princess is in Auckland, New Zealand today, and has had to make operational adjustments.

Diamond Princess is at sea in Australia waters and is unaffected.

Golden Princess is in Ensenada, Mexico today and is unaffected.

Island Princess arrived at Huatulco, Mexico today but had to depart because of the sea surge.

Pacific Princess was slightly delayed arriving into Suva, Fiji, but is otherwise unaffected.

Sapphire Princess is turning around in Los Angeles today, but because the Port is currently closed embarkation will be delayed.

Sun Princess is at sea in New Zealand waters and will visit Fiordland National Park tomorrow as scheduled, however the time will be reduced.

Sitting at the Charlotte-Douglas Airport, we are very fortunate that our flight is not cancelled. Most flights out of Charlotte have been cancelled, but our Lufthansa flight to Munich then on to Venice is on schedule. I can’t stress the importance of Travel Insurance for protecting your Cruise Vacation from the unkown. You can search the web and find that 99% of anyone who writes about travel recommends travel insurance. We were stressed about our flights, so I called Lufthansa multiple times in the last 24 hours and their service has been amazing!

Tomorrow is the big day!! We’re flying out of Charlotte to Venice, Italy! This is our first trip to Italy, and we’re excited (as if you couldn’t tell from my use of exclamation points). Our luck with weather, not so good. Last year for our Hawaii Cruise, we encountered the first Hawaiian Hurricane in decades. Now, we have to deal with the chance of 1 – 3 inches of snow in Charlotte by the time our flight takes off tomorrow. 3 inches of snow pretty much shuts down Charlotte, NC. From lost luggage to weather and accidents, Jess and I are the poster childs for the benefits of Travel Insurance. But the unknown makes travel exciting, and the insurance makes it the unknown not as risky for our finances.

I’ll feel much better once I’m seated on our 10 hour flight to Europe tomorrow. We’ll be among the first passengers as the Costa Deliziosa takes her Inaugural Tour around Italy! We have tours of Venice, Naples, Livorno, and Savona.

As of 6PM ET, the Cruise Lines do not have any official announcements for impacts to itineraries due to Hurricane Ida. Timing is pretty good because alot of the Ships departed this weekend ahead of the Storm. I’ve heard stories of some rocky seas on Twitter. If you are cruising this week, pick up some Bonine for motion-sickness just in case. I am watching this one very closely, as I am scheduled to depart on the Carnival Destiny out of Miami for the Social Fresh Cruise on Thursday 11.12.09. This has been one of the calmest hurricane seasons ever for the Caribbean and Gulf Coast. Just my luck that a rare late season hurricane is churning in the Gulf of Mexico right before the Social Fresh Cruise.

Monday Morning, I will aggregate all the Cruise Line Hurricane announcements into one post. Hopefully, Ida is another non-event for the Cruise Industry and for the Social Fresh Cruise.

The Weather Forecast for Tropical Storm Danny is provided by Brad Panovich, Chief Meteorologist at WCNC in Charlotte, NC. The Red Italics are the potential cruise impacts that go along with Brad’s forcast.

Tropical Storm Danny Track
Danny is a very weak and lopsided storm with most of the intense thunderstorms and winds on the east side of the circulation. Due to this it is likely that Danny’s center may reform further east under the stronger storms. That combined with a strong trough of low pressure and cold front moving across the continental U.S. will push Danny off to the Northeast. Meaning there will be a close call for the east coast. Main impact will likely be in New England and not the Carolinas.
Impacts
Danny will likely strengthen to a minimal hurricane or a strong Tropical storm either way the impacts will be identical. Winds on the east side of the storms will be 65-75mph from late Friday through Sunday morning over most of the offshore waters of the Atlantic coast. Wave heights will be much lower than Bill raging from 4-8’ offshore and 3-6’ in the surf zones. Rip current risk will remain highs through the entire weekend along the entire length of the U.S. coast, Bahamas and Bermuda. Due to the fast movement of Danny all affects of the storms will be long gone by late Sunday. Chances are Danny may never make a direct landfall in the United States.

Wave forecast around Danny 4-8’

Looking Ahead: Elsewhere in the Tropics a new tropical wave has emerged off the coast of Africa that is forecast to slowly develop into a tropical storm by early next week. There also is an increasing chance that an upper low and stalled front in the Gulf of Mexico could develop into a tropical storm next week as well. There will be rough seas and squally weather throughout the Gulf of Mexico through the weekend.

If you have a cruise booked for the week of September 5th, buy travel insurance now before this new development off of the Africa Coast becomes a named storm. Once a storm is named you will not be covered from cancellations or interuptions cause by that storm. Let me know if you have any questions in the comments.

Hurricane Danny? Its a possibility. Amazing how fast things can change in the Atlantic this time of year. All I can say right now is for the East Coast to stay Alert as we now have TS Danny brewing in the Atlantic. Due to the newness and location of the Storm there are not any announced cruise impacts. Subscribe to CruiseSource.us to keep up with all Hurricane Cruise News and we will keep our fingers crossed that Danny will be like Bill and cause minimal impacts to Cruise Vacations.

If you were following along last week, I told you the importance of buying travel insurance before there was another named storm in the Atlantic because once a storm is named you are no longer protected from that storm for trip cancellation or interruption. If you have cruise that is a couple of weeks away, then go ahead and buy Travel Insurance now!

Hurricane Bill appears to be taking the path of least impacts for the cruise industry. I know there are many of you concerned about your cruise this weekend. Especially those leaving the from the Northeast because of inquiries and traffic to the CruiseSource.us. At this time, all ships are leaving on schedule because all reports are remain the same from yesterday and are updated on the Hurricane Cruise Tracker page. Your Captain may make minor itinerary changes when on board to avoid the weather caused by the storms. The Cruise Lines keep the passenger and crew safety first when making these decisions.

It looks like those of leaving from NYC, Boston, and Baltimore may experience some bumpy seas. Make sure to take your Bonine for motion sickness before you get on the ship. Once you get on the ship feel comfortable that the Captain and Cruise Line hold your safety has the most important factor when making decisions about your cruises itinerary with an active hurricane in your path.
